Do you know who Gary Vaynerchuk is?
He's the guy that grew his parents' wine store into a multimillion-dollar franchise by shooting raw videos of himself drinking wine.
If you follow him today, he's a brutally authentic guy that doesn't seem to care whether people like him or not. He's just...him...for better or worse.
In some ways, the raw nature of many of today's social media videos is a bit odd, considering Hollywood has spent a century trying to give us a polished, glossy video to look at.
But in another way, it's the best shift you could ask for as a content creator. Why? Because it's teaching everyone that just being your authentic self is totally OK ... and even preferred.
Ten years ago I wouldn't dream of turning a camera on in my face and just hitting record. Now, that's all I do. Sometimes it's good. Other times it's terrible. But I just keep cranking it out there, because at the very least I consider this:
If people think I'm somewhat smart, and somewhat trustworthy, they'll buy from me.
And if they don't, then that's OK...I can't be friends with everyone now can I?
The best content creation secret is this: Turn the camera on and shoot. Educate people with your knowledge. Inspire them with your wisdom and encouragement.
Then, transcribe your video, put it into a blog, chop it up into social media snippets, and get it out there.
You could hide yourself. You could spend thousands making a slick Hollywood video. But how do you know it would work? Luckily, my way -- and Gary V's way -- is cheap and easy, as long as you can gain the confidence to pursue it.
I'm looking forward to seeing your next video...
